Mink Hole (NERZBAU) brings together contemporary and historical strategies of artistic production from various disciplines to examine the implications and influences of popular culture on adolescent sexual development from the distanced perspective of an imaginary post-human future, a future populated by highly evolved musteloids and ruled by telekinetic yucca plants.(more below...)
NERZBAU(Mink Hole)
Labrynth of Isolated Adolescent Erotic Misery (Mustelidae and Yucca)
MINK HOLE is a multimedia science fiction Gesamtkunstwerk centered on the installation of a life-sized tunneling system built in the artist’s studio. Performances and events taking place in the system are captured by a network of cameras attached to various remote control vehicles traveling through the tunnels. Footage is mixed live as it is fed into the network. Networked performances include those in which a lonely adolescent weasel searches through the detritus of late 20th/early 21st century human visual culture for artifacts he can use to fashion a new culture of his own making; the weasel’s (Lacanian) “mirror stage” in which he separates from the humanoids depicted in the photographs he uses to populate his environment; gangs of adolescent Mustelidae tunneling through, converting, and adapting human artifacts environments to their own uses, often uses relating to the care and maintenance of their Yucca masters; the weasel’s alienation and attempted departure from the Yuccan society through an endeavor to inhabit the comic book world by making himself into an illustration and his lair into a comic book spread.
MINK HOLE uses popular graphic design vernacular culled from Bronze Age and newer comic books, 70’s soft core porn and fashion magazines, men’s adventure and sports magazines, and discarded food and product packaging; adapting it all to suit a solitary adolescent weasel’s needs for culture and companionship. MINK HOLE is shot in the style of a reflexive documentary, in which necessary steps in the production are documented; all events in the space and in front of the camera are incorporated into the broadcast content.
